There’s nothing wrong with singing into a mop or putting a little two-step into your vacuuming routine. This list of 10 squeaky-clean tunes is the ultimate soundtrack to jazz up your cleaning repertoire.
WARNING: You might twerk while you work.
1. Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson (feat. Bruno Mars)
Too hot, hot damn! This tune is catchier than an airborne virus – and a lot more fun.
When I clean to this song, my place turns into a block party for one. It’s the perfect antidote for that one chore that you loathe most of all. Once the beat kicks in, you have zero chance of keeping your hips still – put that momentum into your cleaning.
2. So Fresh, So Clean – Outkast
Who better than Outkast to help you cast off the cobwebs and restore order and shine to your home? These guys are from Atlanta, the home of a particular brand of hip-hop music known as Dirty South. But fear not – a few rotations of this classic, and your home will be, as they say: so fresh and so clean, clean.
3. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger – Daft Punk
This song will give you super-human cleaning endurance – with its pulsating robot rhythm and those hypnotic lyrics urging you to: work it harder, make it better, do it faster. At the risk of sounding a bit daft, try adding some robot role-play to your cleaning routine. Imagine that the vacuum is actually your robot arm. Who knows – you might enjoy a chore that you normally dread. And it will definitely amuse the kids.
4. More Bounce to the Ounce – Zapp & Roger
Once you’ve got the hang of your mechanical vacuum arm, another robotic rhythm will help you stay in character. Who better to hold the groove than Zapp & Roger? With this old-school electro classic pumping from the stereo, you will get more bounce (and shine) from every ounce of dish detergent, floor cleaner and surface spray.
5. Another One Bites the Dust – Queen
Grab your feather duster and grapevine! Freddie Mercury was no stranger to the art of housekeeping – he rocked a Hoover (and a miniskirt) in the music video for I Want To Break Free. But this is the Queen hit that really helps me cut through the dust at my place.
6. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
Over the years, this disco classic has become a bit of an ode to womanhood. Incidentally, it’s also performed by lip-syncing drag queens the world over. This song is an anthem for all of those women (and men dressed as women) who will not be defeated, no matter what heartbreak life throws at them. If you refuse to let that dirt, dust and grime get the better of you, play this one loud and channel that diva drama.
7. Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough – Michael Jackson
This dearly departed musical genius needs no introduction. He is a household name – his music still brings to life discos, parties, and… households all around the world. MJ made so many hits, it’s hard to single out just one for the dream cleaning soundtrack – but this one definitely gets things moving.
If you want to get in character, wear a single sequinned rubber glove. Don’t be surprised to find yourself moonwalking as you mop. Even if you can’t hit the high notes, you won’t stop till the floor gets enough.
8. Perfect – Fairground Attraction
This 80s group was a bit of a one hit wonder, but the ditty that made them famous has a permanent place on my cleaning playlist. This is the ultimate theme song (perfect, even) for a clean home. It is upbeat. It is catchy. And, most importantly, it is a call to arms. Because, as the song says: It’s got to be-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee perfect!
9. Work it – Missy Elliot
Admittedly this song is kind of… well, dirty. But if any song will make you shake your badonkadonk while you work, it’s this one. And while the lyrics are on the dirty side, that booming bassline will give you just the right boost to get your place squeaky-clean.
This veteran rapper has worked with every diva from Janet Jackson to Beyoncé – and when you play this jam, you’ll work it with her too. Your home will be sparkling in no time – just like Missy’s multi-platinum winning career.
10. Rolling in the Deep – Adele
Fancy a little kitchen karaoke while you do the dishes? This thumper is a great excuse to unleash your inner disco-gospel spirit animal. The angst in this song is the perfect fuel for giving those dirty pots and pans and serious scrub.
