Elizabeth this is a wonderful piece. You are articulate, eloquent and have hit the nail right on the head. This has moved me deeply and I'm proud to be part of the same movement as you. Reading work like this reminds me of why I do what I do with fat acceptance activism.

I think I love you. No, really. This is so well written. I wish I could send this to everyone I know and that they would read it, understand it and incorporate it into their thinking. Unfortunately so many people are up to their necks in 'fat kills' and 'chocolate = sin' that I think this kind of message just doesn't reach people. I'm not sure how that can change, but I think articles like this and the gradual media exposure go a long way.

I told a friend the other day with I'm okay being fat and she was shocked. It surprised her that I'm okay with how I look at a size 24. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be a size 10, be able to buy clothes that fit me and conform to what's beautiful in society, but that's not who I am, or who any of the other women in my family are either. Reading about FA and HAES has made me realise that it's okay for me to be happy with who I am. I'm not a bad person for daring to be fat and eat a cupcake. I am allowed to enjoy myself and live my life without worrying about how fat I am. I just wish I could pass this onto my friends, like the one who was shocked and who is frantically dieting before her wedding because she is a size 10 but has cellulite. So many people put themselves through so much to weigh a magic number on a scale. I find it so sad that we can't all just enjoy living in (if we're lucky enough) healthy bodies.

This should be compulsory reading for all medical practitioners, teachers, everyone really. Brilliantly cogent, logical article.

My next logical thought is: even if you could tell whether someone was healthy from their weight (or another aspect of their appearance), is that a reason to discriminate against them? Is the current wave of "health" fanaticism healthy, when it encourages people to judge and feel morally superior to others?

This is particularly well-said for a 101 article. Thanks, and I hope it is read and tweeted over and over!
