David Jones sprung for ads sexualising children

May 31, 2009 by admin · Comments Off

Documents obtained under Freedom of Information laws completely vindicate claims by The Australia Institute that retailer David Jones used advertisements that sexualised children as young as 10, according to advocacy group Kids Free 2B Kids.

The documents reveal a brief asking for girls aged 10 and 12 to be “more adult and sexy”. The girls appeared in an Alison Ashley advertisement created by the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi for David Jones.

“Saatchi & Saatchi hired a top law firm to fight tooth and nail to prevent these documents being released but, after a year-long battle and various appeals, the NSW Ombudsman has finally ordered that some of the material be handed over”, said Kids Free 2B Kids Executive Director Julie Gale.

At the time David Jones vigorously denied accusations in the Australia Institute’s report, Corporate Paedophilia, claiming the company would never eroticise children and had policies to prevent it. The company sued the Institute and its Executive Director Dr Clive Hamilton under the Trade Practices Act but subsequently dropped the action. Read more

The launch of Bing, Microsoft’s much anticipated new search engine, was announced early this morning (AEST) by Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, at the D: All Things Digital conference in California.

Set to change the nature of search as we know it, Bing offers a more organised search experience for consumers to help them find what they need in a far more efficient and relevant manner.

With research showing that as many as 25% of searches remain unanswered and another 25% of searches lead to results that are irrelevant, Bing aims to improve the search experience for consumers in what is a market unchanged for almost a decade and ripe for innovation. Read more

Stay at a Monastery: a unique, inspirational and cultural experience

May 28, 2009 by Sue Hile from AdventurousWomen.com.au · Comments Off

Girls, have you ever thought of staying at a Monastery or a Convent Guest House?

When travelling in Italy a few years ago, I stumbled across a small Tuscan village called Orvieto and decided that I would like to stay there for a couple of days. I was pleasantly suprised to find cheap, secure and comfortable lodgings at a local convent tucked away in one of the tiny cobbled alley ways. I would recommend this kind of accommodation as being very suitable for women travelling alone or together. Monasteries and convent guest houses provide a gentle and warm environment and the stays are totally unique. Read more

How to Build a Successful Online Business

May 27, 2009 by Jackie Maxted · Comments Off

Jackie Maxted is the Managing Director of Directories Group Pty Ltd, digital publisher of beautydirectory.com.au and beautyheaven.com.au. As our Special Guest Blogger, Jackie gives her personal take on how she built a successful online business, the challenges she faced and how she overcame them.

The idea of building a website from scratch, and to our specifications for features and a rough design, was really exciting. It was 1999, and web developing was a new industry with cool and clever people in it. We were naïve about what was involved – I don’t think we realised quite how much we were asking for. We wanted a multi-faceted website without really understanding the enormity of the task. Read more
