New book demystifies the role of women in Islam

A new book which aims to dispel myths and misconceptions associated with the role of women in Islam will be launched today by the Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson.

The book titled “Did you Know? Refuting rigid interpretations concerning the position of women in Islam, and Muslims’ interactions with non-Muslims” was researched and developed by the Muslim Women’s National Network of Australia. Read more

One in five young Australians have been the victim of cyber bullying (Australian Democrats Youth Poll, 2007) and figures from Queensland University of Technology suggest that nearly all teens will experience some form of mobile phone bullying by the time they graduate, with boys more likely to be exposed.

With bullying, particularly cyber bullying, on the rise, headspace – the National Youth Mental Health Foundation – understands how difficult it is for young Australians and that it is hard to find someone to talk to. Franklins set to introduce unit pricing

Franklins, one of Australia’s leading discount supermarket chains, today announced it would implement unit pricing. Franklins is set to begin the rollout of unit pricing throughout its entire store network beginning in September this year.

Unit pricing is the disclosure of a product’s price on a cost per unit weight or volume basis. Unit pricing has been made compulsory in all 27 European Union Countries and in several states in the United States. Read more

CPA Australia has issued a checklist containing key measures through which SMEs can avoid the typical end of year frenzy and instil business practices to help boost the bottom line.

Website selling fake sick notes

A website offering fake sick notes for a fee could endanger people’s health and encourage fraud, AMA President Dr Rosanna Capolingua warned today.

The AMA says that an overseas company has set up an Australian section on their website that charges $40 for fake sick leave certificates containing a local GP’s name and practice.

“The AMA is deeply concerned if people are able to buy authentic-looking fake sick notes over the internet,” Dr Capolingua said. Read more

Coke adds credit card payment to vending machines

Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA), in partnership with Vending Management Services Limited (VMSL) is rolling out new cashless payment technology to vending machines in NSW and Victoria as part of a three-month pilot.

The machines will accept Visa and Mastercard, as well as coins or notes, and are being piloted in a number of high-profile locations including Sydney Airport and Melbourne’s Southern Cross station. There are 150 glass-front vending machines using the new cashless technology currently in the market for the three-month pilot. Read more

By 2020, per capita greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 35 per cent per resident and 59 per cent per worker under a target identified in Future Melbourne – the most ambitious community consultation project ever undertaken by the City of Melbourne.

Around 15,000 individuals, businesses, organisations and community groups from across Melbourne and the globe have participated in the Future Melbourne consultation program. After over 13 months of extensive community consultation, participation and collaboration, the Future Melbourne Reference Group will tonight hand over the draft plan to Council for consideration at its September meeting.

Lord Mayor John So said Future Melbourne had been the most ambitious community consultation project ever undertaken by the City of Melbourne. Read more
